World-Renowned Shipping Companies

International ocean shipping is the primary mode of transportation in global trade. In maritime transport, shipping companies play a crucial role. These are companies that own or lease a fleet of ships and are legally established to specialize in international or domestic cargo transportation by sea. Each shipping company has its own strong routes. Today, we’re sharing a list of globally recognized shipping companies.

  1. MSK / Maersk
    Maersk Line, headquartered in Denmark, is the world’s leading shipping company by volume. It mainly handles FOB shipments, while its CIF shipments are focused on Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

  2. MSC
    Mediterranean Shipping Company, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, operates more than 600 vessels with strong capacity and a global network of routes.

  3. CMA CGM
    CMA CGM, based in Marseille, France, is a 100% family-owned private company. It primarily handles FOB cargo. Southeast Asia is served mainly through its former CNC service, and Australia through ANL. Its key prepaid cargo routes include French lines, the Eastern Mediterranean, and East and West Africa.

  4. COSCO
    China Ocean Shipping Company (Group), founded in 1961, is the largest shipping enterprise in China and one of the world’s biggest marine transportation companies. COSCO owns and operates over 700 modern merchant ships.

  5. HPL (Hapag-Lloyd)
    Hapag-Lloyd, based in Hamburg, Germany, was formed by the merger of HAPAG and NDL. It is one of the world’s top five container shipping companies.

  6. ONE (Ocean Network Express)
    Established in 2017, ONE is a joint venture of three major Japanese shipping companies, focusing on container shipping.

  7. EMC (Evergreen Marine Corp.)
    Evergreen Marine Corp., from Taiwan, was founded in 1968 and was the first to launch a fully containerized shipping fleet in the region.

  8. HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine)
    Hyundai Merchant Marine, from South Korea, is the country’s largest shipping company and one of the world’s largest multimodal maritime transport providers.

  9. YML (Yang Ming Marine Transport)
    Yang Ming Marine Transport, founded in 1972 in Taiwan, has one of the youngest fleets globally. Its routes cover Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and the U.S.

  10. WHL (Wan Hai Lines)
    Wan Hai Lines, from Taiwan, operates routes covering almost the entire Asia-Pacific region.

  11. ZIM
    ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, from Israel, is one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, providing services along major international trade routes.

  12. PIL (Pacific International Lines)
    Based in Singapore, PIL is one of Asia’s largest shipping companies.

  13. OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line)
    OOCL, from Hong Kong, reportedly maintains close ties with Taiwan.

  14. MATSON
    Matson Navigation Company, from the United States, was founded in 1882. It was the first to provide transpacific container liner services and is now a leading U.S. ocean carrier.

  15. HMM (Hyundai Merchant Marine)
    Hyundai Merchant Marine, from South Korea, founded on March 25, 1976, is commonly known as “Hyundai Merchant Marine.”

  16. IRISL
    Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, founded in 1967, primarily operates Middle East and India routes and is the largest shipping company in the Middle East.

  17. ESL
    Emirates Shipping Line, based in Dubai with a branch office in Hong Kong, operates routes covering the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, India, and Africa.

  18. SML (SM Line)
    SM Line, from South Korea, was established in January 2017 and is part of the SM Group. It operates a China–West Coast U.S. express line (CPX), connecting Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, and Los Angeles, with a 5-week transit time.
