Centrifugal Compressor Impellers From China Require Overspeed Testing. Most Don't Get It.

Gas compression operators procure Chinese centrifugal compressors with manufacturer documentation. Impeller overspeed testing — the safety test that verifies burst margin — is frequently omitted in Chinese compressor manufacturing.

An LNG plant in Qatar had specified centrifugal compressors for their boil-off gas service — two identical machines from a Shenyang manufacturer with rotor dynamics analysis, material certification, and factory performance testing included in the scope. The compressors were to API 617 standard, the dominant specification for centrifugal compressors in hydrocarbon service.

API 617, Annex G, recommends overspeed testing of centrifugal compressor impellers to 115% of maximum continuous speed. Recommends — not requires. The distinction matters in Chinese compressor manufacturing because the overspeed test requires a high-speed balance facility capable of spinning an impeller to 115% of operating speed in a vacuum chamber, which is expensive infrastructure that not all Chinese compressor manufacturers possess. Manufacturers who do not have the facility will note in their exception list that overspeed testing is not included, or will omit the reference entirely if the buyer does not specifically require it.

The Qatar plant's specification said API 617. It did not specifically call out Annex G overspeed testing as mandatory. The Shenyang manufacturer's scope of supply did not include overspeed testing. The FAT did not include it. The compressors were shipped and installed.

"To API 617" Does Not Mean Every API 617 Provision Was Applied

API standards for rotating equipment contain both normative requirements — the mandatory provisions — and informative annexes — the recommended but optional provisions. Annex G of API 617 on impeller overspeed testing is an informative annex. A compressor manufactured "to API 617" is not required to have passed an overspeed test. A buyer who specifies "API 617" and expects overspeed testing has specified an outcome that the standard does not mandate.

The significance of overspeed testing is that it verifies the structural integrity of the impeller at stress levels beyond normal operation. An impeller that passes overspeed testing has demonstrated a safety margin against burst at the test speed; an impeller that has not been overspeed-tested carries an unknown burst margin that is validated only by the calculation. Calculations use assumed material properties, assumed geometry uniformity, and safety factors. Physical testing finds the defects that calculations assume away.

In hydrocarbon gas compression service — particularly LNG boil-off — an impeller burst is a catastrophic event. The compressor contains flammable gas under pressure; an impeller burst releases gas and projectile debris simultaneously. The consequence severity makes the safety margin question material, not academic.

The Compressors Operated Without Incident. The Risk Was Not Zero.

The Qatar BOG compressors have operated without incident for three years. The impellers have not failed. The absence of failure does not retroactively validate the impeller's burst margin — it confirms only that the stress during normal operation has not exceeded whatever margin exists in the untested impellers.

The buyer identified the overspeed test gap during a post-commissioning safety audit, 18 months after startup. The Shenyang manufacturer was asked to provide overspeed testing on impeller specimens from the same production batch. The cost of the retrospective testing — shipping specimens to a facility with appropriate test capability, conducting the test, and providing the report — was $85,000 per compressor, $170,000 total.

The test confirmed that the impellers had adequate burst margin at the test speed. The 18-month operating period without that confirmation had not exposed the plant to a certain risk — it had exposed them to an unknown risk. The $170,000 retrospective test converted unknown to known.

API 617 is a starting point. For critical rotating equipment in hazardous service, the optional provisions are worth reading.
