Chinese Reciprocating Pump Piston Rod Seals Fail in High-Sulfur Service
Quote from chief_editor on May 3, 2026, 5:16 amOil and gas operators source Chinese reciprocating pumps for chemical injection and produced water service. Elastomer seal compatibility with high-sulfur process fluids is a material specification gap that produces early field failures.
A chemical injection pump skid — six triplex plunger pumps, 15 MPa discharge pressure, methanol injection service on a sour gas field — had been sourced from a Jinan manufacturer for a production facility in the Tarim Basin. Methanol injection in sour gas service means the pump is handling methanol contaminated with hydrogen sulfide from the produced gas — a combination that imposes NACE MR0175 sour service requirements on wetted metalwork and, critically, chemical compatibility requirements on the elastomeric seals.
The piston rod packing seals on all six pumps had been specified as fluorocarbon (FKM/Viton) — a material with broad chemical resistance including methanol and general hydrocarbon service. What the specification had not addressed was the H2S concentration in the methanol stream, which at the Tarim Basin sour gas field reached 4,200 ppm in the injection fluid during periods of high wellhead backpressure.
At 4,200 ppm H2S, standard FKM elastomers experience accelerated degradation — the H2S attacks the fluorocarbon polymer chain at elevated temperatures and pressures, producing surface cracking and loss of elasticity that accelerates seal wear. The pump operating temperature was 35°C — below the threshold where this degradation would be significant for most FKM formulations. The high-pressure dynamics of a 15 MPa reciprocating pump were exacerbating the degradation through fatigue cycling of the already-attacked polymer surface.
FKM Is a Material Family. The Grade Determines Sour Service Performance.
Fluorocarbon elastomers — commercially known as Viton, Tecnoflon, Fluorel, and various other trade names — span a range of chemical formulations with different levels of sour service resistance. Standard FKM grades (50 to 65% fluorine content) are widely used in hydrocarbon service but have documented limitations in high-H2S environments. High-fluorine grades (FFKM, 70-75% fluorine content) have substantially better sour service resistance but cost approximately four to eight times more than standard FKM.
The Jinan manufacturer had specified and supplied standard FKM packing. The specification had said FKM. The FKM supplied met the specification. The H2S concentration in the specific Tarim Basin service required a higher-grade FKM or FFKM that the specification had not called for, because the specification had not been written with specific knowledge of the H2S concentration in the injection fluid.
This is the same structural gap that appears in most Chinese pump procurement for sour or mildly sour chemical injection service: the general material designation (FKM) is specified, the specific grade requirements (FFKM, 70%+ fluorine) are not specified because the H2S concentration data is not collected and provided to the pump manufacturer during the procurement process. The result is standard-grade seals in high-H2S service.
Seal Replacement Every 600 Hours vs Design Interval of 4,000 Hours
The six triplex pumps required packing seal replacement at intervals of 550 to 650 hours — approximately 1/7 of the manufacturer's design replacement interval of 4,000 hours for FKM packing in methanol service. Each seal replacement on a triplex pump requires pump isolation, plunger removal, and packing replacement — a maintenance event of approximately 6 hours per pump with a two-person team.
At 600-hour intervals on six pumps running 8,000 hours per year: approximately 80 maintenance events per year. At the design 4,000-hour interval: approximately 12 maintenance events per year. The 68 additional maintenance events per year, at $800 per event in labor and consumables, cost $54,400 per year above the design maintenance budget.
The Jinan manufacturer quoted FFKM upgrade seals at $340 per pump set versus $85 for the standard FKM. Annual seal cost at 600-hour interval with FKM: $4,080 plus labor. Annual seal cost at 4,000-hour interval with FFKM: $612 plus labor. The FFKM seals pay for themselves in reduced seal material cost alone within two months.
H2S concentration is a number. The elastomer that handles it is a grade. The specification that connects them is the buyer's responsibility.
