Gold Smuggling Unveiled: $40 Million Worth of Gold Smuggled Monthly from Ghana

In a shocking revelation exposed by Al Jazeera's investigative documentary "Gold Mafia," a gold trader has admitted to smuggling a staggering one ton of gold out of Ghana every month. This illicit operation is part of a larger gold smuggling and money laundering network worth billions of dollars, primarily operating in Southern Africa.

The criminal syndicate involved in this gold smuggling enterprise extends its reach across the African continent and engages in illegal activities in multiple countries, with Ghana being a significant hub.

Alistair Mathias, described as a financial mastermind orchestrating money laundering schemes for corrupt politicians, unwittingly shared his involvement in this illegal gold trade with undercover journalists posing as Chinese criminals. Mathias not only assured the undercover reporters of his expertise but also disclosed that he has been successfully smuggling an astonishing $40 million worth of gold out of Ghana on a monthly basis, totaling an annual gold smuggling operation worth $480 million.

He candidly stated, "I've been doing it for about 13 years now, 14 years. In Ghana, I do one ton. I do $40 million every month out of Ghana. This region, I do probably about 500 to one ton again. I do roughly about $70 to $80 million every month. We can export from Zambia. I can export from South Africa."

Furthermore, Mathias encouraged the undercover journalists to establish a company in Dubai, which they could claim was involved in the gold trade. This would facilitate their money laundering efforts.

It's important to note that Al Jazeera has released only the initial episode of its four-part investigative series on gold smuggling in Africa. As the subsequent episodes are anticipated, this shocking exposé sheds light on the dark underbelly of gold smuggling operations, raising concerns about the scale and impact of such illicit activities on the continent.
