Underground Loader Tyres From China Fail at 60% of Their Rated Life

Underground mine operators procure Chinese OTR tyres based on load rating and ply rating. Field service life from Chinese OTR tyres in hard-rock underground conditions consistently falls below manufacturer specifications.

A nickel mine in Sudbury, Ontario runs a fleet of 28 underground load-haul-dump machines — 14-tonne payload capacity, operating on a 5-meter-wide ramp with a 12% grade, floor condition described as rough cut granite with angular broken rock on the surface. Tyre replacement is a significant maintenance cost. The mine's tyre buyer tested Chinese OTR tyres as a cost-reduction initiative in 2021 — four tyres on two machines, against the incumbent Bridgestone specification, at a purchase price 42% lower.

The Bridgestone tyres on similar machines in similar conditions had been achieving 1,800 to 2,200 operating hours before reaching the wear limit. The Chinese tyres — from a Shandong manufacturer, load rating equivalent to the Bridgestone specification — reached the wear limit at 680 to 820 hours. The service life was 38% to 45% of the Bridgestone baseline.

At a 42% purchase price saving but 40% of the service life, the cost per hour was 43% higher on the Chinese tyres. The procurement saving had been tested, verified to be real, and confirmed to be negative on a total-cost basis within four months.

Load Rating Is Not Service Life. Compound Is.

The OTR tyre market is bifurcated between manufacturers who have developed rubber compounds specifically for the operating conditions in underground hard-rock mining — the combination of angular granite contact, heat cycling from braking on grades, and the flexing pattern of LHD operation — and manufacturers who produce competent standard OTR tyres that meet the load rating and ply rating specifications but have not optimized the compound for that specific combination of stress conditions.

Bridgestone, Michelin, and Goodyear have extensive service life data from underground hard-rock mining operations globally. They have modified their compounds over decades to address the specific failure modes — tread chunking from angular rock contact, casing fatigue from grade braking, side wall cuts from rubbing against the drive drift walls — that characterize this application. The compound specifications in their underground mining product lines reflect that history.

Chinese OTR tyre manufacturers at the commercial tier have developed strong products for surface mining applications — dragline walking pads, haul truck tyres on prepared gravel surfaces — where the failure modes are dominated by load and heat. Underground hard-rock mining compound requirements are a different discipline with less field experience in the Chinese OTR industry.

The Trial Saved $18,000 and Identified a $340,000 Annual Cost

The four-tyre trial on two LHD machines cost $18,000 in tyre purchase price saving versus the Bridgestone equivalent. The service life data from the trial, extrapolated to the full 28-machine fleet at the mine's annual tyre consumption rate, projected an annual additional tyre cost of $340,000 if the Chinese specification replaced the Bridgestone specification fleet-wide — because the higher consumption rate would require 2.5 times as many tyres per year at 60% of the unit price.

The mine did not switch. The trial was a genuine experiment with a clear result. The procurement team documented the full-cycle cost analysis and presented it to the operations director. The Bridgestone specification was maintained. The Chinese supplier was not selected.

This is how OTR tyre procurement trials should work — small-scale testing in the actual application environment, full-cycle cost analysis from the trial data, decision based on cost per hour rather than cost per tyre. The mine's process was correct. The result was the result.

A tyre that costs 42% less and lasts 40% as long is not a saving. It is a procurement calculation that stopped one step before the relevant number.
